Oh boy have I waited for this day to come. The NFL’s new golden child, Patrick Mahomes, has begun his fall from grace. Move aside, Anakin Skywalker. Take a seat, Prince Hans from Frozen. Mahomes turning to the dark side will upstage both of you ten times over.
In case you missed it and were wondering how in the world I got to comparing Patrick Mahomes to Darth Vader and the villain from a children’s movie, there was some drama surrounding an offsides call in the final moments of the Chiefs vs Bills game yesterday afternoon. To be more clear, Kadarius Toney lined up offsides on a possible game winning play, costing the Chiefs the game and breathing life into a previously deflated Bills organization.
Now, how is Mahomes at fault here? Well, after the call he lashed out at the referees on the field and even had to be restrained from going after them by his teammates:
Even worse, he continued to be a sore loser when shaking hands with Josh Allen after the game:
Then, in his post game press conference, he continued to bash the officiating:
The outburst on the sideline is one thing. I get that he’s a competitor and wants to win more than anything, so I can look past his instant emotional reaction to the call. What I can’t look past is the sore loser that made excuses directly in his rival’s face after losing to him fair and square.
When Josh Allen and the Bills lost in OT in the 2021 playoffs after not even getting a chance to snap the ball, do you think he went up and cried like a baby to Mahomes’ face? No!
The worst part about this is the fact that Mahomes has absolutely no ground to stand on in this argument. Toney was more offsides than anybody I’ve ever seen. I mean, the dude was closer to lining up as a defensive end than a receiver.
Mahomes has also been helped by more questionable calls than anybody since he’s been in the league. No, this is not a fact that I can back up with statistics, nerd, it’s just science.
The questionable flag that I remember most clearly was the hold called on Bradberry that gifted Mahomes his second Super Bowl:
The one that pains me the most, however, was the incorrect out of bounds call on N’Keal Harry that started the downward spiral that I’m currently suffering through as a Patriots fan:
Notice how Brady responded in his post game presser. Take notes, Patrick.
All around this is just a terrible look for the two time MVP and two time Super Bowl Champion. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s the best QB in the league, and there is no other player in the NFL that I’d rather have on my team. That being said, the way he reacted made myself and many others lose respect for him.
All I know is, he’ll never be Brady.
